- Types of Electrical Outlets
Electrical outlets come in a variety of sizes and forms. There are different types of electrical outlets worldwide. Outlets listed in this article are some common ones. Out of all, Type G outlet is most commonly used in Singapore.
Why? The Colony of Singapore was a British Crown colony for a total of 140 years, interrupted by Japanese invasion during World War II. Due to this history, it is not a surprise to see certain infrastructure in Singapore are influenced by British, so does the type of electrical outlet used in Singapore. Type G is a British three-pin rectangular blade plug that has a protective fuse inside to protect cords from high-current circuits. It generally include safety switches.
Let’s start to explore different type of outlets.
This type G electrical outlet is the main source of electrical outlet used in Singapore. It is also commonly used in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Cyprus, Malta, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and the Arabian Peninsula. This plug has 3 pins and it is grounded.
Type O is used exclusively in Thailand. Type O consists of two power pins and an earth pin. It is grounded, has an amp rating of 16 A, voltage range of 220-240 V.
Type C is used in all countries of Europe except the United Kingdom, Ireland, Malta and Cyprus. It is also known as Euro plug, which is a two-wire plug that has 2 round pins. This plug is not grounded and thus, needs to be used with caution. It requires an electrical current of 2.5A.
This class II ungrounded plug with two flat parallel prongs is pretty much standard in most of North and Central America. This is an ungrounded plug with 2 flat pins. Type A plugs are generally polarised and can only be inserted one way because the two blades do not have the same width. This plug is rated at 15 A.
Type B electrical plug has two flat parallel pins and a round grounding (earth) pin. Earth pin is longer than the other two so that the device is grounded before the power is connected. American and Japanese plus are similar in design. Type B plugs are rated at 15 amps with an identical voltage and current with Type A.
Type D is almost exclusively used in India and Nepal. The type D plug has 3 large round pins in a triangular pattern. Sometimes, it is used together with Type M plugs for larger appliances. This plug carries an electric current of 5A and a standard voltage of 220 – 240V.
Type E is primarily used in France, Belgium, Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Tunisia and Morocco. Type E plugs are fully compatible with type F sockets and the other way round. The type E plug has 2 4.8mm round pins and a hole for the socket’s earth pin. It is a rounded plug and the socket has a round recess. It carries a standard voltage of 220 – 240 V, with an electrical current of 16A.
Type I is mainly used in Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, China and Argentina. It has two flat pins in a V shape form as well as a grounding pin. It carries an electrical current of 10A and a standard voltage of 220 – 240V.
Type M is used almost exclusively in South Africa, Swaziland and Lesotho. Type M is a 15 amp plug, and it has three round prongs that form a triangle. Type M is also used in Israel and the United Arab Emirates for heavy appliances such as air-conditioning circuits (in cases where wall-mounted units are plugged in to a dedicated socket) and certain types of washing machines.
