- How To Reset A Power…
Most people in Singapore have experienced power trip problems at some point in their lives. We know this is frustrating! However, take note that every house has a complex but interrelated electric wiring system that lays hidden behind the walls, which we call the “circuit breaker.”
In the event of a power trip, chill! Just make your way to your circuit breaker. Circuit breakers installed in Singapore HDBs tend to be in a grey or white metal box. This is usually located in the utility room, store room, or living room. It is always wall-mounted, like house light switches in a box. Just relax and follow the steps below if there is a power outage in Singapore.
Step 1: Identify the Faulty Appliance or Short Circuit
The first and foremost step is to identify the culprit! Ask this question around: “Did anyone just turn on a particular appliance?”
In the simplest scenario, if a power trip happens the moment a particular device is turned on, then you know who the culprit is! What you need to do now is separate the broken appliance and contact an electrician to proceed.
However, if the power trip happens abruptly, you will need to troubleshoot by using the elimination method. We will discuss this later in the following steps.
Step 2: Switch Off Everything in Your House
Turn off all the fixtures plugged into the circuit. All refers to all electrical devices plugged into outlets, including your Internet. The reason behind this step is to protect your appliances and other hardware.
Step 3: Identify the Tripped Breaker and Flip it on
Open your breaker box door and look for the breaker in the “off” position. Look for the odd one out; this is usually the only switch pointing in the opposite direction. Switch off all the switches in the circuit breaker, if you are unable to identify which switch has caused the trip. After that, push the switches to the “on” position one at a time.
Step 4: Identify the Cause
If the circuit breaker keeps tripping, you might have an electrical wiring or earthing issue. In that case, an electrical wiring repair or replacement might be needed.
If your circuit breaker does not trip, gradually plug in each appliance and switch it on, one at a time, to single out the culprit of the power trip and see which one sparks or pops. Once you have pinpointed the defective appliance, just disconnect it from the electric circuit and have it repaired or replaced.
If neither your circuit breaker or appliance blows after you turned on all appliances, the next possibility is that the power trip was caused by an overload. If this is the case, simply minimize the number of devices you use simultaneously or plug them into electrical outlets with a lower voltage rate.
If power trips keep occurring, or if you start to notice burning smells, or even deterioration of the circuit breakers, it is time to engage an electrician immediately. You may need to get the electrical panel repaired or the house rewired. Do not ever try to continue troubleshooting by yourself! It’s always better to be safe than sorry!
Safety Tips When Resetting a Circuit Breaker
There are thousands of volts flowing through a circuit breaker box. Such high voltage could seriously injure someone if improperly handled. Therefore, when you reset your circuit breaker, please make sure neither your hands nor your floor are wet. If possible, also wear rubber footwear made of insulating material, such as rubber footwear, as an extra precaution.
